Our Non-Surgical Gum Therapy

Treating gum disease non-surgically is through a procedure called scaling and root planing. This involves first using a dental scaler to remove calculus and toxin buildup on the teeth at and below the gum line. Gum disease develops when plaque is left to harden on the teeth and releases bacteria that infect the gums. Removing this hardened plaque can effectively rid your mouth of infection and inflammation. Next, root planing smooths the surfaces of the teeth. Healthy gums are left to seal around the teeth and reduce pocket depth to help avoid bacterial plaque from accumulating around and between teeth in the future. This step may be all that’s needed to manage gum disease, so osseous surgery can be avoided.

Effectively Managing Gum Disease

Once active treatment for gum disease is complete, we provide ongoing management of your condition through periodontal maintenance. Another non-surgical procedure, this maintenance is a “deep” cleaning that occurs every 3-4 months in place of normal hygiene visits. Periodontal maintenance cleans the visible tooth crowns and the periodontal pockets of any plaque and bacterial buildup. This ensures that gum disease does not progress and damage oral structures. We encourage you to avoid this step in your gum disease treatment in Canton, OH, so you can continue to live a comfortable and functional life with a healthy smile!
